Kwanwoo is a PhD student studying the mechanics of beadwork, where interactions between spheres and strings give rise to emergent behaviors and new structures. He aims to translate these principles into a new class of meta-materials for adaptive robots and responsive structures. Kwanwoo spent his childhood in Suzhou, China, and went on to earn his B.S. and M.S. in Mechanical Engineering at Seoul National University, where his research spanned experimental fluid dynamics and active-matter soft robots known as “link-bots.” He is especially interested in creating novel soft robotic systems, such as those built around swarms or multiple layers. Outside the lab, Kwanwoo is an avid golfer working to lower his handicap and a longtime soccer player, and has played from middle school throughout to college.
